    The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, South Carolina, seeks an accomplished, nationally recognized academic leader to serve as its Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Immunology. This is an exciting opportunity to join a rapidly growing and evolving organization and lead this newly formed department in support of such growth.

    MUSC, the state's only academic health science center, consists of six colleges and educates and trains more than 3,200 students and approximately 900 residents annually. The University and its affiliates have annual research funding of approximately $359 million for FY24. As the healthcare system of the Medical University of South Carolina, MUSC Health is dedicated to delivering the highest-quality and safest patient care while educating and training generations of outstanding healthcare providers and leaders to serve the people of South Carolina and beyond. Patient care is provided at 16 hospitals, including owned and affiliated, with approximately 2,700 beds and four additional hospital locations in development; more than 350 telehealth sites and connectivity to patients' homes; and nearly 750 care locations situated in all regions of South Carolina. In 2024, for the tenth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report named MUSC Health in Charleston the No. 1 hospital in South Carolina. MUSC has a total enterprise annual operating budget of approximately $7 billion. The nearly 26,000 MUSC family members include world-class faculty, physicians, specialty providers, scientists, students, affiliates, and care team members who deliver groundbreaking education, research, and patient care.

    The MUSC College of Medicine was the first medical school in the southern United States and the 10th medical school in the country. Today, the college is home to approximately 1,500 faculty members committed to providing excellence in clinical care and training 740 medical students, 38 master of public health students, and approximately 900 residents and fellows. The college is also home to a robust basic, clinical, and translational research enterprise, with over $280 million in extramural research funding awarded last year. A national leader on many fronts, the college strongly emphasizes inclusive excellence and interdepartmental and university collaborations.

    Through the MUSC College of Graduate Studies, the institution is also currently home to 142 PhD students and 59 MD/PhD students.

    Reporting directly to the Dean of MUSC College of Medicine, the Chair is charged with advancing all the Department of Pharmacology and Immunology missions and serving as a vital partner in framing the strategic direction for MUSC and MUSC Health.

    Ideal candidates will hold a Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree, have a long history of robust and active extramural research funding, have a demonstrated high-

    impact research program with a strong track record, and have the ability to enhance the research profile of the department. They should have excellent strategic skills, financial acumen, and progressive administrative leadership experience in an academic medical center environment. They must also have a demonstrated track record of recruiting, retaining, and mentoring exceptional faculty members and evidence of past educational and research program building across the biomedical sciences.
