    The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) seeks an esteemed leader, scientist, and change agent in the broadly defined field of immunology and related sciences to become the next Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology and concurrently serve as the inaugural Director of a new Institute for Immunological Sciences. This position offers a collaborative, entrepreneurial, relational leader the opportunity to build out a department with a long-standing history of excellence in research and education programs that focus on viral and microbial pathogens and the host defenses which protect against these organisms. Along with leading the Department, the Chair/Director will ideate and set in place a strategy to build the new Institute for Immunological Sciences, working in a collaborative manner with constituents across URMC and the University. URMC's impressive history in developments and innovation in medical science and research offers a valuable home for the visionary leader to design and grow an integrated entity that brings together the basic science strengths of the Department with related translational and clinical research activities across the URMC to tackle the biggest challenges in human immunity and related medical disciplines.

    URMC is one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers and forms the centerpiece of the University of Rochester’s health research, teaching, and patient care missions. The University of Rochester is a private, coeducational, nonsectarian, and nonprofit research university. The medical center includes the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), Strong Memorial Hospital, the Eastman Institute for Oral Health, University of Rochester Medical Faculty Group, and the University of Rochester School of Nursing. URMC ranks among the top quarter of U.S. medical centers in federal research funding and has an overall academic and clinical enterprise budget of approximately $5.2 billion. The SMD is organized into basic and clinical departments, as well as interdisciplinary research institutes. Faculty receive over $200 million in external funding for basic and clinical research annually, with $160 million in federal research funding. Over 1,800 full and part-time faculty are employed by the SMD, with an additional 1,000 voluntary clinical faculty.

    The successful candidate to lead the Department and new Institute will be an outstanding leader with a demonstrated ability to define a vision and effectively inspire, manage, and mentor teams. The new Chair/Director will be a leader in the broadly defined field of Immunological Sciences, possess a PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent degree, and have academic credentials that merit appointment as Full Professor with tenure at URMC. Candidates must have experience uniting, working with, and leading multi-disciplinary teams. We seek candidates with a track record in recruiting faculty and building expansive research teams, with exceptional leadership, communication, management, and mentorship skills - having the vision and personal drive to be a catalyst for change is essential.

    The pay range for this position is $250,000-$400,000. The referenced pay range represents URMC’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the base range of compensation for this position. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on (but not limited to) market data, experience, and expertise of the individual, and with consideration to related position salaries.
