    Alice L. Walton School of Medicine (AWSOM) is seeking an experienced, motivated, and dedicated medical foundational science educator who specializes in medical microbiology and immunology to participate in the design and delivery of an innovative four-year medical school curriculum that engages medical students in active and novel learning.

    About Us!

    Founded in 2021 by philanthropist Alice Walton, the School of Medicine will offer a four-year, medical doctorate degree-granting program that integrates conventional medicine with whole-person principles and self-care practices. The School of Medicine will welcome its inaugural class in 2025, pending programmatic and institutional accreditation.

    The School of Medicine filed its request for applicant status with Liaison Committee Medical Education in summer 2022. Currently in the design development phase, construction of the 154,000 square-foot building will begin in Spring 2023.     What We Seek

    We are building a cadre of medical professionals trained in conventional medicine and in Whole Health who can reimagine medical education. Faculty and staff members will contribute to the development and rollout of the ARCHES curriculum, which is built on evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning. It includes the following six core elements:

    • Art of Healing
    • Research, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation
    • Clinical Care
    • Health Systems Sciences
    • Embracing Whole Health
    • Science of Medicine

    All six elements will be interwoven throughout the four-year curriculum.

    About The Position

    Foundational Sciences Educators – including the 
    microbiology and immunology experts - will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to ensure students receive broad-based training experience. Foundational sciences elements will be interwoven throughout all four years, and innovative approaches to teaching will be encouraged.

    Microbiology and immunology instructors with expertise in more than one of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:

    • Cellular and/or Molecular Biology
    • Physiology
    • Pathology
    • Pharmacology
    • Biochemistry

    Position Rank/Classification

    The position is open at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor levels, depending on experience and qualifications.

    Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific to the Position:

    Develop Curriculum. Oversee the development and integration of all content tied to their discipline, including the development of patient narratives and various assessment tools including, but not limited to, NBME-style multiple-choice questions and assessment of student performance in active learning sessions.

    Teach. Actively engage in student instruction, developing and delivering content using active learning methodologies. Collaborate with faculty colleagues to create, deliver, and pre-record flipped classroom content. Facilitate small and large group active learning.

    Evaluate Students. Create learning objectives related to respective foundational sciences and map them to the curriculum. Use appropriate metrics and assessment methods to ensure that students meet those objectives.

    Serve. Participate actively in leadership and group membership within the medical school (e.g., Curriculum Committee, Faculty Senate).

    Grow Professionally. Participate in professional development programs to enhance teaching, educational and other skills needed to execute their responsibilities.

    Other. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, ScD, DVM, MD/PhD) with specific training/experience in microbiology and immunology or a closely related field.

    Minimum Work Experiences

    • > 2 years of experience in undergraduate medical education in LCME accredited medical school

    • Proficiency in all areas of medical microbiology and immunology

    • Proven accomplishments in research and scholarly activity

    • Demonstrated experience and expertise in medical education, including curriculum development and delivery in the basic sciences

    • Ability to apply adult learning theory

    Preferred Work Experiences and Qualifications

    • Experience designing, delivering, and evaluating integrated foundational science course
    • Comfort with an array of educational technologies and active learning methodologies
    • Strong commitment to self-care
