POSITIONS IN CANCER IMMUNOLOGY

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) is recruiting investigators and investigative teams (at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) to increase its portfolio in basic and translational cancer immunology research in ovary, breast, lung, GU, GI, brain and hematologic malignancies, including multiple myeloma. Opportunities for leadership positions in the CCC are available for established investigators.

Appointments will be in one of 27 academic departments in the School of Medicine (SOM), many of which rank in the top 10 nationally for NIH funding. UAB is one of the leading economic engines of the State, with a nearly $4 billion budget, more than 1,300 full time faculty and almost 1,200 medical and graduate students. The UAB SOM ranks 23rd nationally in NIH research funding and in the top 10 for all public institutions. Total research expenditures at UAB exceeded $538 million in 2017.

Research areas of interest:

  • Mechanisms of immune escape and suppression in the TME 
  • Targeting the activities of immune suppressive cell types 
  • Developing and testing immune-modulating therapeutics 
  • Enhancing immunogenicity of tumor cells 
  • Developing vaccines to enhance dendritic cell function in tumors 
  • Understanding and intervening in T cell exhaustion 
  • Identification of tumor-specific TCRs and their cognate neoantigens 
  • Developing combination therapies that promote durable immunity 
  • Investigation of pathways of acquired immune resistance 
  • Targeting the gut microbiome to enhance anti-tumor immunity 
  • Predicting and preventing adverse events linked to immunotherapy 
  • Developing oncolytic viruses to stimulate immunity

 

Successful applicants will join a vibrant community of basic and translational immunology researchers and one of the most prestigious comprehensive cancer centers in the country. The UAB CCC was one of the first eight NCI-designated Cancer Centers in 1972 and has been continuously funded for 46 years. Treating over 5,000 new cancer patients annually, the UAB CCC has an extensive effort focused on delivering cancer care and conducting research in underserved populations. The UAB CCC has six scientific programs, including Inflammation Immunology and Immunotherapeutics, with over 400 members who receive approximately $100 million in extramural cancer research funds annually. Research activities are enhanced by 12 CCC-supported service cores and a robust clinical trial infrastructure that currently manages nearly 200 cancer clinical trials. UAB is one of 42 institutions with an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award, which supports translational research and works with the UAB CCC to promote junior investigators.
