The University of Arkansas for Medical Science (UAMS) seeks a dynamic and innovative academic leader with a nationally recognized research portfolio and strong interpersonal skills to serve as the next Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The Chair is responsible for ensuring the highest quality academic, research, and administrative leadership for the department, including strategic planning, faculty recruitment/retention and diversity, resource development and allocation, continuous quality improvement, and representation to external entities.

The Opportunity

The next Chair will have the opportunity to build on the Department’s strong foundation and to craft a vision that will continue to foster discovery and excellence in the microbial and immunological sciences. The Department is comprised of internationally recognized faculty with diverse research expertise in basic and translational research. It is recognized as one of the foremost basic science departments in the College of Medicine, is a key partner in biomedical research at UAMS, and has contributed globally to our understanding of host-pathogen interactions, microbial pathogenesis and immunity, fundamental immunology, inflammation, and cancer. The Department’s current research portfolio, consisting of grants from the NIH, DOD and other sources, is approximately $6 million per year, with $30 million in total funding. The Department also houses the DNA Sequencing and the Flow Cytometry Core facilities, and is home to the Center for Microbial Pathogenesis and Host Inflammatory Responses, an NIH-funded COBRE. The Department’s faculty serve in educational leadership and teaching positions and play a vital role in educating medical students and biomedical graduate students. The Chair will report to the Dean of the College of Medicine and will provide broad leadership to strengthen and grow the Department’s research initiatives, resources, and educational contributions to UAMS’s College of Medicine and Graduate School.


• Engage the Department’s faculty and staff in defining its vision for the future, in line with the University’s mission and strategic plan.
• Recruit and develop a diverse cohort of faculty to execute the Department’s mission and provide a strong succession plan for research, teaching, and mentorship.
• Collaborate with the Department’s faculty and the Dean to manage the Department’s budget.
• Continue to foster the Department’s highly collegial environment.
• Advance the Department’s national prominence in research and build academic collaborations and partnerships across the University.
• Serve as a model of integrity, demonstrating the highest ethical standards of conduct in all aspects of the Department’s work and collegiality.


The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. and/or M.D./Ph.D. in the discipline of microbiology and/or immunology, with a scholarly history that warrants appointment as a professor. We seek an individual with outstanding academic credentials, including an internationally recognized research program, a track record of extramural funding, demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and research, experience in successfully mentoring students and early-career faculty, proven leadership skills, service on national grant review study sections, service to national scientific professional organizations, and administrative experience in an academic health sciences or equivalent setting.
