Please join us in Kauai, Hawaii for the 2018 AMSMIC meeting!

Dear AMSMIC Members and Colleagues:

It is my pleasure to invite you to the AMSMIC Annual Meeting, a conference dedicated to the challenges facing academic leaders in microbiology and immunology research.  AMSMIC is involved in many activities ranging from public policy initiatives to educator workshops, and we welcome conference participation by the leadership of microbiology/immunology units within schools of medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and public health.

The meeting will take place on January 17-21, 2018, in Hawai‘i, on the island of Kaua‘i at the Grand Hyatt Resort.  Like earlier AMSMIC meetings, the conversations with colleagues at the beach are sometimes just as important as the programming in the conference room, and you will have plenty of time in both settings.

The 2018 program features speaker presentations and discussions centered around four themes:

1.  The Academic Research Enterprise:  Funding, Advocacy
     and Communication
Support for science in a new era of skepticism
      •Matthew Fenton
      Director, Division of Extramural Activities
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases
     •Mary Woolley
     President and CEO

2.  Professional Societies:  Modern Roles and Initiatives
New approaches to meetings, publication and policy
     •Peggy Cotter
President of the American Society for Microbiology
     •Jeremy Boss
Counselor of the American Association of Immunologists
     •Stefano Bertuzzi
CEO of the American Society for Microbiology

3.  Leadership Development:  The Chair’s Toolbox
Management skills and the art of negotiation
     •Kevin Grigsby
     Senior Director, Member Organizational Development
     Association of American Medical Colleges
     •Ellen Kandell
     President, Alternative Resolutions, LLC

4.  Local Science:  Beneficial Microbes of Hawai‘i
     Here’s looking at you, squid
     •Margaret McFall-Ngai
     Pacific Biosciences Research Center
     University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa
     Ned Ruby
     Pacific Biosciences Research Center
     University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa

The meeting registration fee includes (4 nights) hotel room/taxes, (4) buffet breakfasts, the opening reception/dinner (Wednesday, January 17), and a sunset dinner cruise (Saturday, January 20) along Kaua‘i’s Nā Pali coast – the right time and place for whale-watching.  We have also organized a choice of two optional pre-meeting tours (hiking in scenic Waimea Canyon or a Snorkel/Sail trip) for those who arrive early.

There is a discount for early registration as well as an AMSMIC member discount, which is a thinly disguised incentive to pay your AMSMIC membership dues (just $100 per year).  If you would like to pay your dues by credit card, please go to and choose the “AMSMIC Membership Dues” button.

If you have attended an AMSMIC meeting previously, you already know the value of talking with your academic cohorts and sharing their strategies for leadership.  If you have never attended, you are overdue for this important networking and career development opportunity, and we are ready to help.  I hope you will be able to join us in January for a stimulating meeting in this spectacular setting.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can answer any questions about AMSMIC or its annual meeting.

William E. Goldman, Ph.D.
President of AMSMIC
